We departed Columbus around 3:30, through Atlanta where we had a bite of dinner, then on to Portland, Maine. It was very late by the time we got the rental car and got to the hotel in Portland.
We started off the next day with breakfast at the hotel, then headed out to Portland Head Light. This lighthouse was completed in 1791 and was built at the directive of George Washington. It's probably one of the more famous lighthouses.
Then on to Bug Lighthouse which was close by.
The burning bushes were spectacular!
We drove through some charming small towns. We wanted to see them all but there just wasn't time.
We saw beautiful fall decorations. These window boxes were so pretty.
We saw lots of old white churches with steeples.
I wanted to photograph them all but it's hard to get good pictures through the windshield.
We passed a swinging bridge so had to make a quick stop.
Beautiful view from the bridge.
Then on to see more lighthouses!
Pemaquid Point Light.
Owl's Head Lighthouse.
Beautiful view from the top!
Owl's Head Post Office.
Doubling Point Lighthouse.
The light keeper's house is up the hill. It's now a private residence.
This was an interesting building out back.
Rockland Harbor Lighthouse is on private property. There's a gate there and it was open but I didn't want to intrude! I thought it was so cute though!
It was a full day and we saw so many things and drove a lot of miles. I felt like I couldn't take it all in!
We stopped in Belfast, ME at Young's Lobster Pound.
These seem to be pretty common in New England but it was a new experience for all of us! It's where they bring in the fresh lobsters. These blue bins are full of live lobsters.
We all decided to have the fresh lobster.
You can watch them cook them for you.
All the seating was upstairs at picnic tables.
Thankfully the lobsters were cracked for us which made eating so much easier.
They were delicious! What a great way to end the day!
We drove on to at Harbor for the night.
