We didn't get a total eclipse but pretty close. We were surprised how light it stayed. Hardly got dark at all. God sure does some amazing work! I couldn't find eclipse glasses anywhere but a friend of mine in southern Illinois sent us two pair! Thank you, Melissa!
You better get ready for picture overload!! Back to our trip.
After coffee at the hotel, we caught the 8:30 Shepler's Ferry across to Mackinac Island. It was about a 20-minute ride.
From inside the ferry we had a great view of the Mackinac Bridge.
And also the Round Island Light.
We had a great view of the island as we approached and I knew right away I was going to love it!
These photos were taken from the ferry windows so there's quite a glare.
We got to the island early so it wasn't crowded yet. This was just as we got off the ferry. There are no cars on the island so we saw bicycles and horse-drawn carriages everywhere.
We already saw a fudge shop! The horse-pulled wagon was delivering supplies to the businesses.
So many bikes to rent.
Another fudge shop but a lovely view of the main street.
Yet a different fudge shop!
The carriages are lined up waiting to take tourists around the island. Later in the day there will be a line waiting to get a carriage.
We got on a carriage right away to tour the island.
We are on the very back row. You can barely see my head. Pat and Dave are on the row in front of us.
Our driver was very entertaining. He was also very knowledgeable. He was a year-round resident of the island.
Arch Rock. You can see the water below.
We passed Ft. Mackinac.
We saw a lot of lovely homes and bed and breakfasts along the route.
Are these flowers gorgeous?
The lilacs were so fragrant. They remind me of our crepe myrtles but smell heavenly. I miss them but they don't grow in the south.
And these peonies...love the way they are coming through the fence.
Love this entrance.
A beautiful church.
This is just a few of the beautiful homes and B&Bs.
We also passed the Community Hall and City Offices.
The courthouse and police station is to the left. There's probably not a lot of crime up there!
This cracked me up!
The cute post office. I bought some post card stamps there.
Those Adirondack chairs sure look inviting!
A beautiful stone church.
Even the UPS man uses a horse-drawn flat bed as his delivery "truck."
Still wears the brown uniform though!
We had lunch at Millie's.
I decided to try the Yooper Beef Pastie. Yoopers are what they call the Upper Peninsula people.
Tiny chunks of meat, rutabaga and carrots in a pastry crust, topped with gravy on the side
It was delicious but not as good as the one Pat makes according to Dave.
I'll continue Day 10 tomorrow with the Grand Hotel...which is quite GRAND!
