Day 12, On South along the Coast

We had breakfast at the hotel and said a sad goodbye to Pat and Dave.  They were heading to Grand Rapids to see the President Gerald Ford Museum while we continued on south along the coast of Lake Michigan.

We drove down where the auto ferry was docked.  This was like the auto ferry that we took across Lake Michigan from Ludington to Milwaukee on our honeymoon almost 47 years ago.  On our honeymoon we went to Door County, then drove around into Michigan and decided to take this auto ferry.  It was late September and I got terribly seasick!  I swore I would never get on a boat again.  Of course, I have but I still remember being so sick!

It's only about 50 miles across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee from Ludington but it seemed to take forever when I was sick!

There was a Michigan sign right there for those that were getting off the ferry so we stopped for a photo.

We stopped at a farm market in Hart, MI to buy some dark sweet cherries.

Next stop was the Little Sable Point Light which is just south of Silver Lake Dunes.

Silver Lake Dunes is over 2,000 acres of huge sand dunes.  There were off-road vehicles with huge tires everywhere.  It was the Sunday before the 4th of July and traffic was bumper to bumper with all those ATVs.  Ben and Cameron would have loved it!  I wish I had gotten some pictures!

We stopped for lunch in Whitehall and continued to the White River Light Station.

We drove on to Muskegon and stopped at the South Pier Light.

We drove to South Haven to see the South Haven Lights.  Again, traffic was bumper to bumper and it was a bit rainy by this time so we only saw them from a distance.  I didn't even get a picture!

We drove to Holland and spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express.  We drove to the lighthouse in Holland but it was getting dark.  Still, a beautiful image and we will be back there tomorrow before leaving town!

Remind me never again to go on a trip over the 4th of July to beaches and tourist destinations!
