Day 7, Gerald Ford Presidential Library and along the eastern coast

We had breakfast at the hotel as usual, then drove to the Gerald Ford Presidential Library.

It is on the campus of the University of Michigan.

The library wasn't very big, mainly one big room, but there was a lot of interesting stuff in it.  We saw a movie about how Ford became the 38th president.

There was also some information about Betty Ford.

The Ford Presidential Museum is in Grand Rapids.  We didn't get there on this trip but Pat and Dave left us later in the trip and visited there.

We then drove through Detroit to Belle Isle Park.  It's an island in the Detroit River between the United States and Canada.

We saw this beautiful fountain as we entered the park.

It was disappointing that the park didn't look well maintained, at least not the area where the bathrooms were.

The main reason for going to the park was to see the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse.  It is the only marble lighthouse in the United States, made of Georgia marble.

It was a bit of a walk up to it from the parking lot.

The information I read said it is art deco style.  It's very different than any lighthouse I've ever seen.  There was a fence around it so we couldn't get close to it.  Again, it wasn't very well maintained.  The grass was all grown up around it.

Doug checking out the Detroit River.  Canada is just across the way.

We drove along the eastern coast of Michigan to Grosse Point.  We stopped there and had lunch at the Side Street Diner.  It was a cute little place with all kinds of Elvis memorabilia on the walls.  The food was good too.

Grosse Point has some huge, expensive homes along the lake including Edsel Ford's home.  It is now a historical home and open for tours.  I really wish we had toured it!

We continued along Lake Huron with a stop in Port Huron at Fort Gratiot Light.  This is the first light constructed in Michigan, constructed in 1829.  It is still an operating lighthouse and the oldest surviving lighthouse in Michigan.

We saw this big ship pass while we were viewing the lighthouse.

We drove along the lake and stopped in Port Hope at Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse also on Lake Huron.  This lighthouse was built in 1847, is still an operating lighthouse, and one of the oldest in Michigan.  The keeper's house is now a museum.

We drove to Port Austin at the tip of the mitten in Michigan and saw the Port Austin Reef Light from a distance.  I didn't get a picture of it though.

We continued our drive to Bad Axe, Michigan and spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express.  We had dinner at Rachel's.

We usually ask for restaurant recommendations when we check into the hotel.  We always try to eat local and not at a chain.  We usually are very pleased with the recommendations.

While driving along, I spotted this barn quilt.

When you start looking for them, they seem to be everywhere!  We saw many more but it's very hard to photograph them while the car is moving.

I went to the library yesterday.  I haven't been to the library since the kids stopped going to story time!  I was afraid I would be frowned upon but they were very nice and I was able to get a new library card.  The last time I was in the library they didn't have computers!  I wanted to rent the movie Somewhere in Time that was filmed on Mackinac Island.  The library didn't have the movie but said they partner with other libraries and they would get it for me.  I think I'm going to use the library more often!
